The guerilla street art project of the third year Fine Arts students of the University of San Agustin is now officially part of Inside Out, the largest participatory art project that aims to inspire communities by exhibiting in public spaces.

Inside Out is a “global art project transforming messages of personal identity into works of art” inspired by the French street artist JR who won the TED prize last 2011 and is known for pasting large format portraits in public places. These portraits are used by the artists as a medium to convey their untold story to the people and show them real identities.

The portraits of eleven young Ilonggo artists are displayed on the walls Muelle Loney wharf. These are exhibited for free and can be viewed by everyone. This public art exhibit hopes to communicate with everyone. The artists want to share their identity, inspiring people by transforming dead spaces into a wall where everyone is free to show “what they stand for.”

“Inside Out Project, The people’s art project is a global art project transforming messages of personal identity into works of art initiated by artist JR from France. It has now exploded into a global action which has inspired young people to become part of a pro-active generation speaking out for what each stands for. The Fine Arts students agreed on a class project which brought Inside Out in the Philippines and became a sensation that gave them exposure in local television and radio. A public space was transformed with massive self portraits of students made public. The class was challenged to find a public wall and space that can be transformed into a street gallery. Ronnyl Bulahan and Jonn Laserna initiated the search as location coordinator. After many trials and errors, they occupied an abandoned portion of the wharf area. The project leader, Kat Malazarte wrote to Inside Out for printing support. What they got in return was more than what they expected. Inside Out New York photo booth printed the self-portraits and were sent to the university.
