Arte sa Kalye, “The Best of Western Visayas”

Arte sa Kalye was a project that started out as a dream. A dream that was fueled by the artist’s’ desire to leave a mark, to occupy a territory, and to own a space – trademarks of an explosive new movement that would become known as street art. These artworks show figures, portraits, symbols and icons of Iloilo that suggests our local artists’ mastery in representation and observation, as well as the artist’s ability to translate themes, concepts and ideas into visual narratives.

It has been a mission of a motley crew of Iloilo-based visual artists, composed of Fine Arts students, nurses, architecture graduates, tattoo artists, commercial painters, art teachers and even government employees to realize their visions of the theme “Best of Western Visayas” and paint it on a hundred-foot stretch of concrete wall in world-renowned park by the Iloilo River called Esplanade. Their efforts were lauded by the public for the objectives that they have achieved. The once barren, unattractive and what was referred to as an “eye-sore” fence of plain hollow-blocks situated in the park’s main thoroughfare has now a handsome cement finish. On top of it is a beautiful and picturesque array of scenes from Western Visayas rendered in a dramatic and playful mix of colors, masterful use of hues and tints, and a dynamic use of composition and illustration.

The images the artists portrayed were a diverse selection of scenes from the island of Panay. There was a mural of typical Ilonggo culture, of Dinagyang warriors, fruit vendors, churches and landmarks. Another wall was a blend of images of flora and fauna that are endemic to Panay, the brightly colored fishes, of birds, the toucans, quails and the majestic eagle and of course, the flora, of the gumamelas, orchids and the famous rafflesia. A technically well-rendered mural of children frolicking amidst a backdrop of Iloilo City structures, Paraw Regatta, and delicious fruits and sea foods was among the crowd favorites. On the farthest corner of the wall is painting that was celebrated for its illusion of 3-dimensionality. It is a simple portrait of a young girl form the Panay Bukidnon people of central Panay, perhaps she is a binukot princess. In the mural, she is shown looking outside a capiz-shell window into the Iloilo River. Her head resting in the palm of her right hand and her left hand is outstretched with a flower in its grasp, as if offering a symbol of peace to a painting of a dove that is hovering nearby. The paintings are unique in their own right, but when taken as a whole, the scene is nothing short of breath-taking.

The artists accomplished a great deal with their passion, talents and hard work. They were able to activate an alternative arts location and at the same time, keep the momentum to support the burgeoning art scene in the city. With the advent and popularity of the internet and social networking to the young generation, these murals, once fleeting and temporary works, can be shared to an audience of thousands. This movement, street art, is poised to become the biggest counter-cultural movement since punk, but what is cool is that everybody seems to be so supportive of it. And these artists, our artists have landed right in the middle of it.
